If you're loving all the crazy, cool and kawaii nail art looks that are everywhere at the moment then try this fun and fruity mani.It's quick and perfect for amateurs- ideal if you love the kooky Katy Perry look or want something a bit more special than your average french polish.

This design works on natural or false nails. I'm placing it over my own nails, cut short and square, as this keeps it 'daytime' (and allows me to keep typing....). You will need a coloured polish for the 'background' and some of these fimo fruit 'slice' shapes, available from Sallys, online or even on Ebay where you can get some great bargains-

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--wxIbZOBDwE/TZn-6WFWWtI/AAAAAAAAAHE/JkLM3iMgMH8/s200/fruit.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591780690671065810" />

Firstly, paint your nails in your desired shade. I chose a Barry M's no. 304 'Mint Green' but this look also works wonderfully with a cute coral or last season's 'mannequin nails' nude. Use two coats to get a really strong, even base.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YifpjwrzfxU/TZn9iaqZhMI/AAAAAAAAAG8/qxYXfph0Yj4/s320/IMG00621-20110404-1747.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591779180071716034" />

When your nails are completely dry, pick out your first fimo shape. Paint a small blob of clear varnish where you wish to place it then press down onto your nail. Use an orange stick or tweezers to really press all the edges in.

Immediately paint clear varnish over the fimo to stop it 'curling' away from the nail.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WyvIO5HcTuQ/TZn9YqcCkJI/AAAAAAAAAG0/1wpjY2IvHaI/s200/IMG00622-20110404-1758.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591779012507766930" />
Now repeat with the other fruits.

Once you've completed your design, paint over it with a good layer of clear varnish. I used an Asda polish with gold glitters in it (as I was feeling a little lazy and couldn't find my clear). The glitter is sort of cute though...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-24SVicWenYg/TZn88lhyOdI/AAAAAAAAAGk/vLze6V3YIIQ/s320/IMG00624-20110404-1811.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591778530153347538" />

And there you have it, fruit themed nails perfect for summer in a flash.

DIY: Eyelash Extensions in Minutes

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ajQZn0zMtZU/TZkYYBu12ZI/AAAAAAAAAGc/B2P6iiU2ptM/s200/10396386-eyelash-extensions.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591527213418011026" />
Eyelash extensions are great- capable of giving you doe eyes for days and allowing you to get up looking gorgeous. One problem. They can be pricey.

A decent (i.e 'full') set can set you back over £70. That's an expensive addition to your beauty regime even if it does save on mascara (and if like me you like big eye make up then you'll probably still pull out your wand for evening regardless.)

But never fear, there is a cheaper way to get plush peepers without busting the budget. Get thee to the beauty supply store and follow these simple steps to luscious lashes in a flash.

Firstly you'll need the lashes. I get mine from Sallys but you can also pick up individual lashes from Superdrug and Boots. the lashes come in clusters (each one is a tiny cluster of hirs in a sort of fan shape) or individuals (single or two hairs together). The individuals tend to last longer. I've worn individual lashes for weeks whereas clusters tend to shed on me within a fortnight.

Next is the glue. Sallys do a great eyelash extension glue for a bout a fiver. Shake the bottle up before application and tip a few drops at a time onto a square of foil or a saucer you don't mind getting messy.

Now use a pair of tweezers to remove one lash from the tray, dip in the extension glue and place on your lashes at the root. The extension should be attached to eyelash, not skin. If you can, sweep the glued part of the extension a little way up from the root of your eyelashes before placing it down. This will give more area for the glue to stick.

Hold the extension in place for a few seconds then use the end of the tweezers to gently push the fake lash so it's level with your own.

Repeat with as many lashes as you need to get your desired look.

For a feline effect, add a few lashes to the outer corners. To open up your eyes, try placing longer lashes in the centre (above your pupil) and getting smaller towards the outside. For a really full on look you can add individual lashes (upside down) to your lower ones, although this will requires a steady hand with the eyeliner to blend the lashes at the root, unless you want a piece-y Twiggy lash look.

These lashes can last for a good few weeks if you are careful and don't scrub at them. Use oil free make up remover or wipes to remove any shadow or liner. At first the process can seem fiddly but once you're used to it it takes almost no time- having had some practice I can now do a full set in 15 minutes without breaking a sweat.

Enjoy your new flirty flutter.

DIY: Bettie Page Pin-Up Fringe

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6jWXTw0f9ac/TZkA98qwf2I/AAAAAAAAAGE/F_Kjsnz1Gig/s320/bettie%2Bpage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591501476614668130" />

Fancy injecting some pin-up style into your look? Feeling the pinch and needing more 'bangs' for your bucks? Try creating your own fabulous fringe- it's not as hard as you'd think and completely transforms tired tresses.

Bettie Page embodies the quintessential pin-up; sexy without being cheap, with a cheeky grin and style to match. Her signature look was definitely her now-iconic curved fringe. Not only cute, the sleek style adds shine to any style long or short, framing the eyes and highlighting a groomed pair of brows.

The look has been sported by celebrities as diverse as Katy Perry (in a fabulous bright blue wig), Petra Nemcova and even Beyonce in the video for 'Telephone'.

All you'll need is a comb and a good pair of scissors (i.e made for cutting hair, not paper/toenails!). You can get an okay pair from Superdrug for about £7.

It's easiest to cut your fringe dry. If hair will shrink/curl when dry, leaving you with a shorter look than the one you originally intended.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 274px; height: 184px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v0I0zLblkpw/TZkDrDTGXAI/AAAAAAAAAGU/6ARG_asHPI4/s320/beyonce.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591504450511854594" />

Firstly section off your fringe. I took a triangular section starting 2 1/2 inches back from your forehead and about 3 inches at its widest point (aka your front hairline). The larger your section, the thicker and more 'directional' your fringe will be.

Push the rest of your hair out of the way and comb the fringe section forwards. Cut it straight across slightly below your eyebrows. This leaves you with plenty of room to trim to your desired shape.

Comb your fringe through again. Now starting at the temple on your right side (or left if you're left handed) cut a downwards curve to the centre of your fringe about 1cm up from the mid point of your brows. When cutting take your time.

It's always better to take too little off than too much.

Now start from the centre and cut upwards and outwards to the opposite temple.

Remember that for a true Bettie look you're going to want to curl the ends of your fringe slightly with a curling iron, straightener or roller so whatever length you cut to, your fringe will end up at least fractionally shorter. You can use hairspray to 'set' your fringe in place if desired.

Here's how my first attempt turned out (excuse the shoddy photography):

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8w9AOQwZFLE/TZj8s1yTCxI/AAAAAAAAAF8/21sya77OWzs/s320/Bangs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591496784662956818" />

Not too bad for a novice and completely free (and I used paper scissors because A. I'm a hypocrite and B. I suspect my hair scissors have been pinched for present wrapping)

Review: Louis Theroux America's Most Hated Family

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 136px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yMZcqP4150E/TZjwuDH87MI/AAAAAAAAAF0/M3wuNPs9r8Y/s200/supreme-court-westboro-baptist-church.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591483611283778754" />

In possession of a belief system? Harbouring some sort of morality/conscience/general good feeling towards humanity? Then prepare to be relatively insulted.

'Relatively' because watching the Phelps family wax lyrical about their hate of pretty much everyone- bar each other- seems at first so ludicrous that one simply can't take them seriously. The really worrying thing about this whole programme, fronted by Mr Leading Questions himself Louis Theroux, is that these people love the attention. They revel in it. They truly believe they were put on this earth to perpetuate hatred through minor, negative celebrity.

It's compulsive viewing, but then madness always is. A sideshow for the 21st century. Who doesn't want to watch an group of indoctrinated 17 year old's dance to a bastardised version of Lady Gaga's 'Telephone', or witness terminally repressed parents struggling to come to terms with their daughter's excommunication without showing any sort of emotion. And which of us doesn't feel well-adjusted, liberal and superior watching a group of clearly brainwashed bigots raving about 'fags'?

That is, until we really look at the children. Small boys who truly believe that Obama is 'the anti christ' and 'the beast'. Girls who will never marry because they can't do so with outsiders, pursuing imaginary relationships with camera men from Holland. There is such poignant sadness in their lack of freedom. At the age of 16 who wouldn't take religious fervour over the loss of everything they've ever known? We often sigh that we can't choose our families. Sadly it seems that some people can't even choose not to picket funerals with theirs, for fear of some outdated vision of hell.

Freedom of speech is one of the most important aspects of a diplomatic society. One should be able to exercise their right to express views without prejudice. As a writer I advocate this completely. But how long can views which incite prejudice be tolerated? Especially when aired at funerals for soldiers who have died protecting the country in which those picketing reside? Members of the Westboro Baptist Church enjoy the rights of an American citizen whilst causing misery to those around them and even to their own excommunicated family members.

Personally I feel if anyone should be excommunicated it's Fred Phelps and his 'church'. Possibly from the human race.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 375px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oTG1De_LM50/TZL2n2gZGcI/AAAAAAAAAFk/z5cR5eKZC70/s400/amazing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589801252026915266" />

Death of A Diva

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 220px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q5-nK8oqsYA/TYn7K8k_YTI/AAAAAAAAAFc/bXDofsWgDaY/s320/young%2Bliz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587272978208350514" />

The entertainment world was saddened this afternoon to hear of the death of cinematic legend and incredible beauty Elizabeth Taylor. She was 79 when she passed away due to congestive heart failure.

The embodiment of glamour, four times Oscar nominated actress Taylor was possibly best known for her starring roles in lavish epic 'Cleopatra' and her equally fabulous part in Hollywood's greatest romance with co-star Richard Burton. A relationship resulting in two of her eight marriages.

Not only a talented actress, Elizabeth devoted much of her time to campaigning for AIDS-related charities. She was instrumental in the beginnings of the American Foundation for AIDS Research as well as creating her own charity, the 'Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation' . She was estimated to have raised more than $50 million to fight the disease.

Elizabeth Taylor was one of the greats. She owned a dignity and grace lacking in much of today's celebrity culture, a last vestige of the 'Golden Age' of cinema and as beautiful inside as she was out. She leaves behind four children, nine beloved grandchildren and a wonderful legend.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 352px; height: 350px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DKFt-MHlyDQ/TYn33MhwvII/AAAAAAAAAFU/BtKVaOwnULI/s400/elizabeth%2Btaylor.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587269340357508226" />

'You are who you are. But it is quick. And cheap. And surprisingly yummy.

Just don't make it for anyone you plan on kissing- unless you or they have a thing for garlic.....

CARBON-HORROR

You will need:

* Pasta ideally spaghetti but I used some weird, oversized tube-y stuff today
* Garlic finely chopped one clove or two?!
* Ham chopped, or mushrooms if you're a veggie
* Frozen peas
* Cream double or single, whatever you have to hand usually works
* Cheese parmesan if you're fancy, cheddar if you're not...
* One egg yolk, beaten optional. Not one for the preggo's out there
* Black pepper to taste

1. Cook pasta in boiling water (I don't add salt because ham is usually pretty salty)
2. Drain pasta and using the same pan- oh yes, minimal washing up- heat some olive oil or butter depending on what you have to hand.
3. Add garlic and ham, stir for a couple of mins until garlic is cooked but not coloured. If it goes brown, that was too long....
4. Add peas, a grind of black pepper and a big splash of cream and stir, stir, stir.
5. As soon as the peas are tender i.e no longer frozen, add pasta. Stir some more.
6. Take off the heat and once cooled slightly so your eggs won't scramble, stir in the beaten yolk.
7. Dish up, sprinkle with grated cheese, shovel into mouth like you haven't eaten in weeks.

Delicious, semi-nutritious and super quick (and did I mention cheap?!)

(Vintage) Champagne Tastes on a Tap-water Budget?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 224px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nt1vHDHlAGk/TYDCgwN9uKI/AAAAAAAAAFE/j_x3idUKOrQ/s320/dress%2Bone.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5584677405894490274" />

Feeling the spring/summer vibe but no cash to splash on a fresh wardrobe? Reluctant to part with your pennies for a Primada disaster? Never fear, Trollied Dolly is here.

I've been a huge fan of the dollies' designs since buying a cute Cath Kidston-style floral print number from them last summer. They specialise in adorable designs with retro/vintage styling and quirky details, perfect for spring. From 'so now it hurts' japanese inspired prints to full on fifties tea dresses with super cute strawberry/flower print, the attention to detail on Dolly's cutesy clothing is perfect. Stock changes all the time so you're unlikely ever to have an awkward same-outfit-moment.

Now all this is well and good but beauty (and quality) comes at a price.

But wait! Before you cut up the credit card, check out the website, www.trollieddolly.com because all stock in their sale is massively reduced to £25.

No, you aren't losing your ever loving mind. On the table we see a mother undergoing a c-section.Young enough at 23 weeks that under other circumstances she could legally be aborted, 1 1/3lb Holly is lifted from Clare's womb and we watch her first few minutes of life. She looks tiny, fragile but absolutely human. Over the next few hours drugs are pumped into her under-formed lungs to help them work. If all goes well we are told she will remain in her incubator until she would have been born. An alarm goes off. Doctors rush in, massage her heart and pump her with adrenaline. 'The baby's blood sample is just not compatible with life' we hear. And she's gone.

It's devastating viewing. Presenter Adam Wishart describes the existence of these '23 week babies' as a 'netherworld between life and death', 'born so prematurely that their survival stretches modern medicine to its limit'. Within the first minute he asks 'is it worth trying to keep these babies alive?'.

At Birmingham Women's Hospital- one of the few capable of resuscitating these babies-we meet Simone. Born 4 months early she has been subjected to injections to raise her blood pressure, drugs to induce clotting, drugs to boost her immune system.One week ago she would have classified as a miscarriage and allowed to die. A mere half of babies survive birth this early and of those 9 of 100 survive hospital. The statistics are stark.

And our natural reaction as human beings is yes. Yes we should do all we can because these babies cry, they wriggle and move like healthy babies. But 8 out of every 9 surviving 23 week old babies will suffer disability throughout their life. It's easy to raise funding for a plethora of NHS services to help 'miracle babies'. It's a lot more difficult to find the cash to support them when they become adults. This point is brought home by Heather, once a 'miracle baby' now a profoundly disabled adult who points out that 'as you get older your disability affects you a hell of a lot more', 'if you're willing to support someone at the beginning of life you should be willing to support them to the end'. The question is are we?

When you see the human stories behind the births and statistics it's hard to imagine making a decision based on money, regardless of the concrete fact that when all emotion is removed the few positive stories are far outweighed by the painful ones. It's not a question that can be answered in one programme. It's probably not even a question that can be definitively answered. Currently it's a personal choice made by the parents based upon the recommendation of those who know the most, their healthcare team.

When you look at the headlines raised by the programme- 'we must give premature babies the same rights as everyone else' (The Mirror)- it's easy to agree, but the programme ends on a question- when you put financial issues to the side is the current policy of support providing just that, or are we perpetuating suffering that nature would otherwise end? Is life at 23 weeks truly life, or is it just existing by the grace of science?

Soup, Glorious Soup

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-waPyJTtFuhs/TXjaKon-mqI/AAAAAAAAAEs/AKvoS6NQiSs/s320/IMG00392-20110310-1318.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582451614364375714" />
Last week I acquired possibly the best present in the world. A Kenwood blender.

Now this may not be as sparkly or leg lengthening as a beautiful pair of shoes, or as thrilling as a trip abroad (*sigh*) but I couldn't be more excited.

Why, you may ask?

SOUP!

Soup has got to be one of the best meals in the world. Delicious, nutritious and cheeri-oh so easy so eat but best of all student budget friendly.

Already this week I have demolished a pile of vegetables the size of a garden shed. Five-a-day? Pah! Try five-a-meal. I've pulverised potatoes, blended beetroot and creamed carrots to my heart's content and I still can't get enough.

So here is the recipe for this morning's minor triumph, low fat, easy and cheap Roasted Tomato and Garlic Soup

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rr-_HUM6-9E/TXjaTQ19aRI/AAAAAAAAAE0/Ha2XFTji8-M/s320/IMG00393-20110310-1333.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582451762599389458" />

Shopping List:

2 packs of on the vine tomatoes (large or small. I used large as they're currently on 2 for 1 in Tesco's!)
1 stock cube
3 large cloves of garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp of tomato ketchup

Optional:

thyme/oregano/herb of choice
balsamic vinegar
sun-dried tomatoes (I had a few left in a jar. Mix the leftover oil with vinegar, a little mustard and seasoning for an easy salad dressing)

1. Pre-heat the oven to about 200

2. Place the (washed) tomatoes and garlic cloves (skins on, papery outer skin removed) into a roasting tray. Add olive oil and herbs/a splash of balsamic vinegar if available.

3. Mix well

4. Roast until they look like this (lots of colour but not burnt. The garlic cloves should feel slightly squishy)-<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-10a5scr5OjY/TXjZnVRnRgI/AAAAAAAAAEc/rfdap6CbCLQ/s200/IMG00390-20110310-1315.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582451007874876930" />

5.Pop tomatoes in the blender with a stock cube, tomato ketchup (really) and a cup of boiled water. Squeeze the middle of the garlic cloves out of their skins and into the soup. Add sun-dried tomatoes if using. Whizz until smooth.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JtbW7neKLTg/TXjZ6S5P-SI/AAAAAAAAAEk/jrR93ueoT2s/s200/IMG00391-20110310-1317.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582451333653330210" />

6. Taste! Add seasoning and more water as needed to get your ideal consistency.

Now just heat to piping and eat. I like mine with lots of pepper and a completely unnecessary swirl of cream if I'm feeling posh.

Making Fags A Drag

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 249px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vQIX49I1cHQ/TXjMGU0qyKI/AAAAAAAAAEE/9qyic3lZXMY/s320/fags.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582436147166628002" />
We're all used to seeing the rainbow of cigarette packets above the tills at our local supermarkets and service stations. What 'quitter' hasn't been tempted by the shiny boxes as we resentfully purchase petrol and mints?

As a newly quit smoker (okay it's only been five days but it's going well, I promise), I for one welcome the lack of temptation that a new ban on cigarette displays will bring. But how fair is it? Should we, as 'law-abiding consumers' (Forest, smokers group), be forced to buy 'under the counter' if we exercise our right to choose to smoke? Having already been banned from bars, restaurants and public areas, shouldn't smokers at least be able to buy cigarettes without persecution?

I don't think so, no.

One fifth of adults smoke and this number is in steady decline due to anti-smoking measures. The process is working. Not displaying cigarette cartons will bring down the numbers of new smokers and young or 'child' smokers. This in turn will reduce not only lung cancer but diseases as varied as acute myeloid leukemia and cancers of the cervix, kidney, pancreas and stomach; abdominal aortic aneurysm, cataracts, periodontitis and pneumonia.

With NHS reform going ahead apace due to the sheer financial impossibility of the old system and spiralling costs, anything that brings down the massive number of smoking related cases should be applauded. If we wish to retain our right to a health service, surely we have to prove our eagerness for 'health' itself?<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 252px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-byRduYSe2gI/TXjNQwAiuxI/AAAAAAAAAEM/sgBgeO24ky0/s320/cigs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582437425774508818" />

Of course not everyone shares my view. Philip Davies, Tory backbencher, was quoted as calling the plans "gesture politics of the worst kind" and a "triumph for the nanny state". Outcry has arisen amongst the tobacco industry groups, many of whom reacted with anger. The Tobacco Manufacturers Association said there was "no credible evidence" it would work. The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) has even called the ban on displays a "betrayal of our nation of shopkeepers". This reaction is more understandable when you consider that the average cost of compliance is expected to be £300 per store.

It's a tough one to call- personal choice and shopkeeper's rights versus our responsibility to our own health and to our healthcare system.

But I for one will welcome the space where those packets used to be. No just because it might take away a little of the temptation, but because we can't have our cake and eat it. Perpetuating a national habit which costs the NHS an estimated £2.7bn per year, whilst complaining about health system shake ups which will give GPs control of 80% of the national health budget would be sheer hypocrisy.

Smash, Crackle, Colour Pop

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 90px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KaD4b9cCTM4/TXi6lcljBJI/AAAAAAAAAD8/_SeTLR9IyF8/s320/models%2Bown.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582416890617332882" />

If you're a fan of the nail art trend prepare to get very excited.

Having picked up in 2010, the fashion for creative, kooky and even crazy nail design shows no sign of fading. In response to this Models Own (a go-to brand for designer polish dupes)and nail art queens WAH Nails are bringing out a line of 9 crackle polishes in a rainbow of colours.

The innovative formula means that when spread in a single layer over normal polish, the paint 'splits', creating a crackly, broken design. Dependant on your colour choice this could look neon bright, work sophisticated or even animal print vampy.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--N6RMgcpblg/TXi6ccVfqsI/AAAAAAAAAD0/Ea-25-YZec4/s200/Leopard%2Bnails.htm" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582416735931181762" />
I fell in love with Barry M's black version last year (see my efforts, right, layered over GOSH gold polish to get a 'leopard-y' effect), prior to which my only attempts at 'fancy nails' were writing on my toes with nail art pens (these are my sister's little piggies- sorry Dot!). <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 120px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DWqvMXrt1mE/TXi4Z4g_W1I/AAAAAAAAADs/I-56kIwEuaU/s200/Awesome%2Btoes.htm" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582414492932725586" /> Not so effective and definitely not fashion-friendly. No matter how 'awesome' your toes...

Using 'Smash Up'polishes couldn't be easier. Paint your nails with your chosen base colour ( two coats are best IMO)and allow to dry completely. Now just sweep a thin layer of crackle varnish over the top.

If you fancy getting more creative try painting three vertical stripes in different (but compatible) shades for your base before applying 'smash up' in a contrast colour over the top to get a cool neon 'rainbow' effect.

Released on April 20th in Boots stores, I can't wait to get my hands on the turquoise, yellow and orange for fun, summer-bright talons. And at just £6 each, they'll liven up your old polishes without breaking the bank.

You Can Ring My Bell

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tc3M4RHpzF8/TXdzWmzM10I/AAAAAAAAADc/S01h23KGr30/s320/brady%2Bbunch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582057095358633794" />
Spring has sprung. Birds are singing. Flowers are blooming...and they're not the only ones. Trouser legs everywhere are expanding at a rapid rate. Yes ladies (and gentlemen, you haven't escaped) we're surrounded by bell-bottoms.

Sadly this is not a polite term for a large derriere, they have returned. In all their slim on the thigh, flared to the floor glory. With the comeback of 1970's style for S/S 2011 it was probably inevitable. In retribution for years of skinny-jean suffocation calves are now stretching out and it's big news on the highstreet.

Derek Lam's S/S 2011 collection showcased high-waisted dark denim versions with (be strong!)perma-creased fronts whilst Topshop Unique really went to town featuring stretchy flares in futuristic graphic prints reminiscent of AllSaints' signature styling.

The saving grace of this trend (can you tell that I'm not a fan?) is that this is no return to the late 00's baggy look. More relaxed, the 2011 bellbottom skims the knee without hugging it, aiming for a hippie vibe rather than a grungy one. Waistlines can be high or low but the majority of styles seem to hit just below the bellybutton- ideal if you've bought into the crop-top craze which seems to be everywhere at the minute.

If you opt for That Seventies Show style this spring, please bare in mind the cardinal flare rules for this year to avoid looking like ABBA threw up on you:

*Flares should start slightly above the knee and be wide enough to cover the foot.

*Length is also important (ooh er matron etc...sorry...). If you intend to wear heels (or, dare I say it, platforms) with your trousers then they need to be long enough to fall almost to the floor. Ankle grazers do not work with this cut.

*Make sure they fit well in the body especially if high waisted. Without going into graphic detail, a badly fitting crotch is always a huge fashion fail.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_Rn0Dz5g2HI/TXdy2EpUsDI/AAAAAAAAADU/19jvVEgkn6I/s320/DollyParton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582056536434585650" />*Try to resist anything rainbow, sequinned or overly embellished. But how to consume such confectionary-coated cakes without doing irreparable damage to our waistlines?

Well fret no more. Petit Pois cakes have achieved the impossible! Due to launch in Selfridges this week the company, led by Harry Eastwood of How To Cook Yourself Thin fame, have created baked bliss using vegetables instead of butter. The cakes contain beetroot, pumpkin or courgette and are gluten and lactose free- perfect for even the most sensitive snacker.Even better, the blissful buns contain half the amount of sugar found in a normal cupcake and only the thinnest glaze of icing.

Topped with a marzipan pea (just to remind you how virtuous you're being)Harry and her team include only the best free range eggs (no sad chickens here), real vanilla and 70% cocoa chocolate. Flavours available include lemon, chocolate, vanilla and orange. Available from March 15th, at £5 per box of two this is no budget bakery, but at this time of year we all deserve a treat.....

Lent just got a little bit easier.....

Last Day Blues...

So today, the 27th August 2010, is my last day at the wonderful Wahanda.

I've now been interning here for three months (and a couple of days, but who's counting?) and I've absolutely loved it. And not just because we're based within window shopping distance of Oxford Street Topshop.....

I've learnt so much about everything from the technicalities of web-based publishing to improving my own copywriting (and I can tweet really fast now!). In fact this week I produced my first ever full page, from text to pictures via layout. Now I'm not pretending this is a crowning achievement- luckily the wonderful tech team at Wahanda (check out their frankly-very-amusing blog here) have provided us with an awesome set-up on the server, however I was still inordinately proud of this little achievement.

You can check out this first foray into the world of computer-talk (yes, that is the technical term...) here.

I'll be speaking in binary before you know it.....

Hope for Homeopathy- New Evidence Suggests Large Scale Effectiveness In Cuba

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 204px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_f7_f7-3WRxA/TF_U2TySzCI/AAAAAAAAABU/rJcdJNV6HkY/s320/homeopathy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503351299159280674" />
Classified as an ‘alternative’ treatment, homeopathic remedies involve small amounts of ‘irritant’ preparations massively diluted and taken in the form of a sugar ‘pill’. The theory is that these substances, which would usually aggravate the immune system and cause adverse symptoms in a healthy person, cause the body to build up a ’tolerance’ and thereby combat symptoms in an ill patient.

One example of this would be the treatment of insomniacs with a preparation containing a coffee derivative (coffee being known to cause sleeplessness in an individual with normal sleeping habits). Although there has previously been little hard scientific evidence to support their effectiveness, many case studies show an improvement in conditions such as psoriasis when treated with these remedies.

The anti-homeopathy argument has always been based on a lack of evidentiary support. However recent successful trials using homeopathic remedies to treat illnesses resulting from flooding in Cuba have led the way for fresh debate.

In 2007, homeopathic remedies were administered to 2.3 million patients in Cuba, in an attempt to prevent the deadly disease Leptospiratosis in the face of a developing epidemic. Leptospiratosis or ‘Weils disease’ as we prefer to pronounce it is caused by bacteria carried by rats, and thrives in tropical areas where there has been a high volume of rainfall. The bacteria contaminate the water supply and multiply quickly, affecting large areas. The disease is extremely serious and in many cases has proved fatal.

Homeopathic remedies were prepared from tiny amounts of an inactive form of the bacteria which cause the illness. Within a short period of weeks the number of cases had fallen from 34 per 100,000 people to just 4 per 100,000. This figure was a huge reduction from official estimates and its effects seemed to grow long-term - the rate of infection was reduced by 84% by the following year. For the first time on record, the numbers of cases of Leptosiratosis did not increase proportionately when further rain fell.

Sadly in areas where the homeopathic remedy was not administered the rate of infection followed exactly the original prediction.

Dr Sara Eames, President of the Faculty of Homeopathy proposed that ‘Anything which appears to reduce infection rates in a potentially fatal infection, particularly when it can be prepared and delivered quickly, safely and effectively, has to be taken seriously and studied further’.

It is hoped by supporters of homeopathic medicine that the sheer size of the study and its apparent immense positive impact will lend it gravitas. It seems that there is much more to consider regarding the provision of these remedies by the NHS than the basic issue of cost-effectiveness.

Indulge in Wellness Tourism and Beat the Brits Abroad Bloat

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 206px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f7_f7-3WRxA/TFrtkcdRchI/AAAAAAAAAAs/5RKErf4Ice4/s320/spa+abroad.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501971105156526610" />
Everyone knows the usual equation for a holiday abroad- take three weeks of surviving on grapes to get that ‘bikini body’, add a dehydrating flight, a fortnight of rich meals, lazy days and boozy nights and what do you get? A ‘break’ that leaves you looking and feeling worse than you did before you left. You could be forgiven for thinking you’d be better off spending the money on a swanky gym membership or a spa break.

Well fret no more, Brits abroad because binging and bloating is out and ‘wellness tourism’ is in. More and more relaxation-seekers are searching further afield for the best in spa breaks, treatments and even cosmetic surgery. Feast your eyes on all the work I've been doing for other people (polishes halo):

Get Serious About Skin Protection

'Cougars' Boost Figures (In More Ways Than One)

Tried and Tested- The Fish Pedicure

A little note on this one, as it's a personal favourite.

Thanks to the wonderful people at Wahanda, myself and the (v.talented) copywriter Charley had the opportunity to experience the fish pedicure just as the craze hit London. For the price of a pizza, myself and the Silver Fox visited Quilon on Sunday to sample their three course set menu (appetiser, starter, aperatif, main course, dessert, coffee AND hotel chocolat chocolates!). The restaurant itself looked lovely, all linen table cloths and tasteful murals. There was a complete variety of diners, from business men having lunch to families eating together.

And the food was beautiful. SF maintains that it was the best meal he has ever had- high praise from a man who has eaten everywhere from Bali to Hong Kong to New York to Bromley Burger King!

Appetisers were served in the form of lovely mini-poppadoms with two choices of 'dip' (one red and spicy, one cool, green and corriander-y). Starters included seafood broth for me- a super-fresh selection of prawns, mussels and scallops with a delicious tomato-based broth poured over the top, and mango-lassi chicken for him, lovely chicken fillets with a slightly spicy mango/yoghurt sauce drizzled over them.

Before the main course we were brought what looked like round sherry glasses containing a hot, spicy tomato broth with chopped coriander floating on top. It tasted gorgeous, with just the right amount of chilli heat. It was so nice I was actually worried they might take it away when our mains quickly arrived!

We decided upon main courses of lamb in a pistachio sauce for myself and guinea fowl marsala for SF, both of which were accompanied by lemon rice and beautifully presented. The maitre d' even brought me a small bowl of curd rice to try (looks/feels like rice pudding, tastes, like cottage cheese with a hint of nutmeg) ( it wouldn't have gone with my main course but I do love a weird dessert/side dish mash up of an afternoon...).

My dessert of baked yogurt was a highlight- two little cups, one mango, one blood orange. The mango was especially lovely, with a strong, fruity aftertaste. SF is not usually a pudding fan however he ate his own chocolate cake before finishing my yogurt with enthusiasm! Another high point was my drink- while SF stuck to orange juice I sampled something new, a rose beer. Mild and fresh tasting it looked beautifully pink and very festive, presented in a tall glass.

The service was fab, the waiters smartly attired, polite and more than willing to make suggestions and recommendations. For around £25 per head I couldn't recommend this Michellin starred venue enough and already know of several friends who have booked in upon hearing how great our experience was. I will definitely be visiting again very soon!!

Blink&Go- Fabulous Frames for the Windows to your Soul!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 102px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_f7_f7-3WRxA/TFrvd4jrjPI/AAAAAAAAABM/jA-EU6DrLT4/s320/lashes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5501973191463767282" />
Excitingly on Monday the wonderful Sherry Bennett was good enough to let me try Blink&Go lashes, the next step in eyelash extensions. Nights out and environmental stresses such as wind, rain and pollution can leave even the highest quality human hair looking dull unless it is properly maintained. Luckily for those of us without a team of professionals to look after our hair clip-ins- unlike bonded extensions- can be washed, conditioned and even styled without even getting your own hair wet!

The best way to wash clip-in extensions is with a good quality moisturizing shampoo. Bearing in mind that there is no glue involved in this method of extensions you can wash them right up to the weft, smoothing shampoo downwards in the direction of the cuticle. Rich conditioners can also be used so long as you remember to rinse thoroughly. For a real treat or if the ends of your extensions begin to feel a little dry over time, try using a sachet of deep-conditioning treatment and leaving it on the extensions for ten to fifteen minutes.

To avoid hours in front of the mirror (and make styling the back of your own head easier!) try curling your extensions before you put them in. The easiest way to do this is to clip them onto something secure at a comfortable height (personally I use a scarf with one end shut in a drawer, but something a little more sophisticated like a clothes airer would do just as well!) then style them as usual, not forgetting to spritz them with a little heat protectant or serum before using hot tongs orstraighteners to keep them looking silky.

Comments

Transforming Super-Short Hair Into Glamorous Lengths Like Rumer Willis

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on March 3, 2010

Cropped styles may be chic and easy but sometimes the difficult growing-out phases of shorter styles can be unbearably long. Whether you're regretting a big change or simply fancy something a bit more extravagant for a big event, extensions could be the answer to your hair prayers. We've all seen the pictures of Britney Spears' visible bonds- living proof that for individual bonded extensions to look natural, they must have at least four inches of hair to hold on to and be attached well away from the hair's ‘edges' by a skilled professional- but stars like Rumer Willis get it right using clip-in's and bonded wefts which are attached closer to the scalp and can be removed easily to reveal your short cut.

Bear in mind that wherever you place the top row of your extensions, the hair must be long enough to cover the bonded area or clips (anything less than a couple of inches just wont lie flat enough) and your own hair must be blended carefully with the extensions to avoid a ‘seam'. The best way to do this usually involves combing the hair together and securing with hairspray. Curly and wavy styles often blend better with short hair and the blurred edges disguise any shorter layers. Try curling the hair first, then running your fingers through it to get looser waves. The extensions can then either be left loose or gathered to one side as in Rumer's picture and secured with pins or a decorative clip or comb.

If you decide to go for the longer-lasting glued-weft method, bear in mind that you will need to layer the extensions in order to get a more natural look. If your own hair is very short it is often better not to go for the 20 inch mermaid-hair look, but something funkier around collarbone length or slightly longer to get a more undetectable look.

Comments

Clean Up Your Act - The Best Way To Wash Your Extensions

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on February 24, 2010

One of the main reasons many women are reluctant to wear bonded extensions is that they worry about maintenance, however with the right washing and drying tips (and some styling tips from our articles on curling and putting up your hair!) there's no reason for extensions to be any harder to look after than naturally long locks. Follow in the footsteps of stars like Kirsten Dunst who sport healthy, well-maintained extensions, and groom them with these simple steps:

To begin with, choose the right shampoo. The best to use are frequent-use or any mild shampoos. The best ones are sulfate and silicone free, as these ingredients can weaken the bonds and make the hair slippery. Put your hair behind your shoulders so that it falls downwards, then wet it and smooth the shampoo on gently from the top to mid-lengths. When you rinse, the water will carry the shampoo to the ends of your hair without drying them out.

Next, select a good quality, moisturizing conditioner (again, sulfate free products are best) and smooth it down from the mid-lengths to the ends of your hair, taking care to avoid the root area where the bonds are. Allow to sit on the hair for the recommended length of time before rinsing. Using cool water for a final rinse is a great tip for added shine!

When it comes to drying, pat your hair as dry as you can with a towel before blow-drying. When towel drying, avoid rubbing the hair and be as gentle as possible to avoid tangling. It's a great idea to use an anti-frizz serum on the ends of your extensions to keep them soft, shiny and neat.

Food for thought....

In an effort to prove myself capable of writing about more than just hair extensions (a comfortable, yet somewhat vacuous topic....) For the most fashion forward hair this year, try using extensions to create these trendy styles and stay ahead of the fashion pack.

Braids:
Whether you choose schoolgirl style, milkmaid braids or even one long plait to the side as seen on Alexander Wang's models, simply attach your clip-in or permanent extensions and get twisting. Extensions are an absolute must to get the right volume and length for this Rapunzel-style look.

1970's chic:
This style involves long, one-length, well-conditioned hair and can be worn either straight or slightly wavy. It is most popular with a side parting, although a center part works too. If you choose to style your lengths straight, try curving the ends in with your straightening iron to get a more retro, softer look. For the wavy look try braiding the hair loosely before bed, then simply remove your hairbands and combs your fingers through in the morning!

Buns, Chignons and Twists:
The slightly tousled up-do is a big trend for this year, as well as being extremely practical! See our previous article on ‘Using Extensions to Create Stunning Up-do's' for tips on how to achieve this look with clip-ins or permanent extensions. Top-knots are another fashionable choice and can be created my making a high ponytail on the top of your head, twisting it until it coils around on itself and then pinning securely.

The most popular colours for long hair in 2010 look set to be golden blondes, reds and peroxide platinum (as seen everywhere in 2009!).

How to Blend and Feather Your Extensions

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on February 4, 2010

If you look at photos of short-haired celebrities who take the plunge with long, beautiful extensions, one thing you won't notice is that tell-tale ‘shelf' where their natural hair ends and the extensions begin. Even those with naturally short hair - Paris Hilton, Frankie Sandford of ‘The Saturdays' and Katie Holmes to name just a few- make sure the two are cleverly blended.

One great tip is to wait until your install is complete and then use a razor comb (gently) drawn downwards from just above the ‘join' area. This will graduate the ends of your hair as well as the top layer of the extensions. Go slowly at first- it's better to take too little than too much. You can also use this technique around the front of your hair to blend the long extensions into your natural layers, creating a ‘feathered' look to the front of your style.

Many girls love a layered look like that of Girls Aloud instead of a long, straight, blunt cut a la Lily Allen's extensions. If this is the case, try sectioning off horizontal layers of your hair and using either a razor comb or hairdressing scissors to chip into it (unevenly to avoid a ‘shelf) all the way along. Let down the next layer of hair (easy to find if you have used liquid gold and wefts or a weave!) and repeat, feathering the length slightly above the previous layer. By starting from the bottom up you can make sure not to go too short or thin.

It's always useful to have a picture of your style inspiration for reference and remember that the best tip of all for natural extensions is making sure you have added enough hair- if your own hair is particularly short and thick this may mean a full head and a half of extensions, or in rarer cases even two, in order to create that natural look! Though our full head hair extensions are suitable for 95% of users.

Using Extensions To Create Stunning Up-Do's

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on February 1, 2010

To create a cute pony-tail with clip-in extensions, try fitting the bottom rows upside-down. This enables you to sweep them upwards without creating any unsightly bumps or visible clips. You can fit the top rows as normal or, for a 60's sex kitten look as seen on Nicole Ritchie, try back combing the top of your own hair then smoothing a comb over it to create a volume ‘bump' over your top extension rows.

This style will work just as well on bonded weft extensions, just be careful to brush your own hair back over the bonded areas (this may be easier if you make the pony-tail at mid-head level) and secure with hairspray.

If you want to create a complete up-do, try making a ponytail, then coil and pin strands of your hair around and over the band. This can be as sexily ‘mussed-up' or as neat as you like. You can even try attaching clip-ins along vertical partings down the sides of your head instead of horizontally, sweeping them back to create smooth-sided styles such as chignons without having to worry about visible attachment points. Get creative, use your imagination and with a little bit of practice you can create practically any style using extensions!

Many women love the look of long, straight or curly hair, but worry that extensions are impractical or lack versatility. Luckily this is a complete myth, as extensions can be used to create practical ponytails and stunning up-do's provided you have a few tricks up your sleeve.

Celebrity Colour Without Damaging Your Hair

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on January 21, 2010

Do you change your mind about your hair colour every five minutes? Worry about damaging your locks beyond all repair in the name of highlights, lowlights or ‘peekaboo' colour flashes? Hair extensions may be the answer to a hair-colour addict's prayers.

If it's natural highlights you are looking for, simply adding a few strategically placed sections of our weft human hair can add depth and tone to an otherwise bland base colour. For a ‘sunkissed' look, select extensions one or two shades lighter than your current colour, or go even lighter for a more rock chick look with highlights in pale gold or bleach blonde.

For gorgeous classic lowlights like Jennifer Aniston, pick a colour a shade or two darker than your current hair colour. Lowlights look gorgeous installed through the bottom layers of your hair (where it is naturally darkest) for a naturally graduated look. Alternatively you could place them nearer to the crown to give the impression of a darker shade all over.

If you're going for a funky look, try placing some ‘flashes' of colour in your hair. To do this, pick a colour that will stand out whilst still complimenting your natural hair shade. Pale blonde is a popular choice for brunettes, whereas blondes look great with chocolate sections peeking out underneath their hair, or try some of our gorgeous wild-coloured hair in pinks, purples or even jade green for a flash of individuality. Simply use ‘liquid gold' to glue inch-wide sections into the lower layers of your hair for a fashionable new look, or if you want something more temporary, attach an extension clip to the section and remove whenever you feel like a change!

How To Avoid Hair Extension 'Exposure'

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on January 18, 2010

Once you've installed your new hair, are looking after it properly and enjoying having a beautiful, long style, the one worry can be making sure that your tracks are never 'on display', especially in this windy winter weather. Well stress not because there are several ways you can 'winter-proof' your extensions and make sure that nobody knows they aren't as natural as they undoubtedly look!

Firstly make sure your colour match is just right. Before ordering your hair, make sure to check the colour chart handily provided on our site, taking into account whether your hair is a ‘warm' or a ‘cool' shade.

If you are gluing the wefts in, try pulling down a FINE layer of your own hair over the weft and securing using liquid gold glue. This will disguise the weft even if your own hair blows up!

If you have fly-away, fine hair like Pamela Anderson, try using a light mist of hairspray before leaving the house or, for extra volume as well as hold. Lightly backcomb the top layer of your hair before brushing smooth and misting with spray to secure. Backcombing and spraying your hair before applying clip-in extensions also prevents slipping.

By following these tips you can keep the truth about your extensions between yourself and us (and we won't tell!).

Hair Extensions On Short Hair

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on December 29, 2009

Hair extensions aren't just for those of us with mid-length locks looking to boost length, they can be used to funk up even short do's. Rihanna is a great example of this. To achieve her thick, sweeping ‘faux hawk' effect, extensions could be added amongst the top layers of a crop (or even a bob if you prefer, just pin the sides back and secure using hair spray). For Rihanna's cool colour just mix up your shades, adding a light bleach- or honey-blonde along with a dark base colour.

If you have gone for a Danni Minogue style chorus girl bob this season, try adding extensions in a colour to match your own at around ear length, then trim to the same length as your own hair. This will create a thicker effect, making the symmetrical lines of your cut even sharper and allowing extra ‘swing' and volume.

If you've opted for a pixie crop but fancy a change for a xmas party, try adding small amounts of extensions in a highlight-shade to your fringe just as Marley Shelton did at a recent premiere. Once attached, just brush your own hair forwards over the attachment area, before feathering the ends of the extensions to suit your own style!

Styling Your DIY Human Hair Extensions

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on December 17, 2009

One of the best things about human hair extensions, apart from their gorgeous looks and how easy they are to care for, is that you can style them much like your own hair! Whether you desire Lauren Conrad curls or a poker-straight Megan Fox style, anything is possible with the right tools and a little bit of imagination!

To straighten always use the lowest heat possible so as not to damage your extensions since, just like your own hair, excess heat can make them dry. Try applying a little heat protecting spray or blow-drying cream before you dry your hair after washing, then run the straighteners gently through the lengths, avoiding the bonds or glued areas.

For beachy waves like Ashlee Simpson, simply learn how to plait your hair! By braiding your locks into a simple, three-strand braid (or two if you want a tighter pattern) before bed, you will wake up with silky, mermaid-type waves. Instead of brushing just run your fingers through them with a little serum for shine and sleekness and you're ready to go!

For beautiful LA-style curls, try using a large barreled tong. Start by using a little heat protecting spray or cream to make sure your extensions are in top shape then slowly wind a section of your hair around the barrel. The larger the section, the looser the curl will be so for tighter coils use a smaller amount of hair at a time. Allow the hair to ‘set' for a few seconds then gently pull off the barrel. As with straighteners, avoid contact between the hot barrel and any glues or bonds. Spritz with a little hairspray and you're done!

Top Tips For Longer Lasting Celebrity-Style Wefts

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on December 14, 2009

Once you have all the tools you need to create a great new look it's tempting to dive right in, but by using a few simple tricks you can make your application easier, more professional and longer lasting. Here are five top tips for beautiful, easy DIY glue-in weft extensions:

1. Shampoo your own hair with a clarifying shampoo before you begin and, just this once, do not use conditioner. This provides a clean surface, free of natural oils, for the liquid gold glue to bond to.

2. Always cut your wefts to fit the parting in your hair and not vice versa to ensure a tidy section without any overlapping ends, which may stick out.

3. To make application clean and mess free, suck up your liquid gold into a plastic syringe. You can then dispense glue as and when you need it without spillage or stickiness. This method also saves on wastage, as you can wrap a piece of foil or cling film around the tip to keep the glue fresh!

4. To make your wefts super secure, try ‘sandwiching' - first glue down your first section of hair, then pull down a fine section of your own hair from above. Glue a second, matching piece of extension weft on top of this, pushing down to ensure it is firmly ‘sandwiched' to the weft below. Easy!

5. ALWAYS allow the glue on your weft to become slightly tacky before applying it to your head. This will prevent slipping and ensure a better bond. To make it even stronger, run a warm dryer over the section and do not wash for 24 hours after application.

Unbeweavable - Getting A Celebrity Style Sew-In

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on December 7, 2009

Everybody wants beautiful tresses for Christmas but some of us aren't willing to use glue in order to get them. If this sounds like you, for whatever reason, then having weft hair extensions sewn-in could be exactly what you're looking for! One of the first extension techniques and suitable for afro, relaxed and Caucasian hair alike, ‘weaves' involve your own hair being braided into ‘cornrows' before a weft of extension hair is sewn to the plait. The ability to wash the hair as normal, lack of expensive bonding tools or products, endless styling options and authentic look of these extensions make them popular with celebrities such as Khourtney Khardashian, seen below getting hers done at a salon;

Weaves can include all of your natural hair or just some of it, can be plaited crown to nape or ear to ear and, like bonded methods, can allow you to experiment with colours, textures, length and volume, the possibilities are endless. With a good weave you can even create stylish, natural up-do's, perfect for the party season.

Once you've found a talented stylist to create the install for you, choosing the hair is easy. Use the weft section of our site and choose between high quality 100% human Euro hair or the luxurious Remi hair in a varying range of styles. Pick your colour and you're ready to go!

www.rapunzelrapunzel.co.uk

Posted by Melanie Johnson on December 2, 2009

We all know that hair extensions are the perfect way to get gorgeous, flowing locks quickly, but getting them fitted in a salon can cause serious financial damage! Luckily weaves and other hair weft methods are not only cheap, fashionable and favoured by celebrities such as Heidi Montag and Katie Holmes, they can also be easy to do yourself even if you don't have the plaiting skills to create a sewn weave. When installed and removed carefully they will cause minimal damage to your natural hair.

The simplest DIY method for applying wefts uses bonding glue known as ‘liquid gold'. A clean, straight parting is made in your hair and glue applied to the ‘track' found at the top of wefted extensions. Allow the glue to sit for a few minutes and go ‘tacky', before placing the extensions along the line of your parting, being careful to attach the weft to your hair and not your scalp! For best results, the weft can then be sealed by applying light heat, either with a hair dryer or straighteners on a low setting.

Our hair wefts come in an approx. 5ft weft - plenty for a full head. Cut the weft into sections to perfectly fit your head.

This method is super flexible and dependant on the desired ‘look' can add length, Cheryl Cole-style volume or both if you're going for all-out drama. You can even add highlights, lowlights or flashes of colour! When you fancy a change, just apply bonding glue remover, allow to sit for a few minutes until the glue softens and then slide the weft from your hair, removing any residue gently with a little more remover and a comb.
